About the piece
Vespers
The Irish church spent two centuries arguing with Rome about the date of Easter. It sounds like a technicality; it was a question of who calculated time, and Irish monks were formidable at the arithmetic. They lost the argument at Whitby in 664 and kept the skill, which is why Irish computists later turned up teaching the subject on the Continent.
Vespers marks an hour fixed by men who took the measurement of hours extremely seriously.
