About the piece
Keepers of the Island
Ireland was never persecuted into martyrs, so it invented its own. An early Irish sermon describes three colours of martyrdom: red for blood, white for leaving your country forever, green for the daily grind of penance and hunger at home. Two of the three required nobody to kill you.
Keepers of the Island looks across at a place chosen by men who had decided which colour they were going for.
