About the piece
The Reader
Insular scribes put spaces between words. Latin had been written as an unbroken run of letters for centuries, and readers had to sound it out to find the joins — but monks working in a language that was not their own needed the words separated to read at all. The gaps they added made silent reading possible, and Europe has read that way ever since.
The Reader sits at the invention of reading quietly, which happened in rooms like this one.
