About the piece
The Golden Vessels
In 1980 two men with a metal detector found a silver chalice, a paten and a strainer in a bog at Derrynaflan in Tipperary — eighth-century church plate of the first rank, buried by somebody who meant to come back for it and never did. It had been in the ground for a thousand years, a few feet down, in a field.
The Golden Vessels shows the kind of thing Ireland keeps losing and then finding by accident.
