About the piece
Three at the Shore
Medieval Irish writers sorted their own saints into three orders — the first holy, the second holier, the third holiest — each generation stricter and poorer than the last. It was a way of admitting that the golden age was over while insisting it had definitely happened.
Three at the Shore puts a generation on a headland, at the point where each one decided the previous had been too comfortable.
