About the piece
The Silent Hall
Cormac's Chapel on the Rock of Cashel, finished in 1134, has a stone roof and carved Romanesque arches — the point at which Irish building stopped being local and started borrowing from the Continent. Everything before it is small and dry-laid. Everything after it looks like Europe.
The Silent Hall stands on the far side of that line, in a room Ireland did not know how to build a century earlier.
