The Painted Guardian
Roman writers described the painted and tattooed peoples of these islands at length — with alarm, and with all the unreliability of anyone describing an enemy. What survives is the impression rather than the fact: that appearance was armour, and the face was prepared before the body was. This guardian is imagined, carrying colour into a dark wood.
The Painted Guardian outlived the empire that wrote him down. Most good ideas do.
