The Northern Watch
From 795, when longships appeared off Rathlin, the danger in Ireland came from the water. For two centuries the northern coasts kept a habit of watching the horizon — not out of curiosity, but as a job someone did every day for the rest of their life. This woman is imagined, standing among stone crosses with the sea in front of her.
The Northern Watch is what vigilance looks like once it has become ordinary.
