About the piece
The Island King
Early Ireland held something like a hundred and fifty kingdoms at once. A king ruled a túath — a people rather than a territory — and his authority was local, negotiated and rarely secure for long. Kingship here meant responsibility for a few thousand souls and the weather they lived under. This crowned figure is imagined, standing among weathered stone huts.
The Island King holds a title that sounds larger than it was, and a duty that was not.
