About the piece
The Fire Keeper
The Celtic year turned on fire. At Samhain the household hearths went dark and were lit again from a single communal flame; at Beltaine the cattle were driven between two fires before the move to summer pasture. Someone had to keep that flame — a role of trust rather than spectacle. This masked figure is imagined, and the mask is the point.
The Fire Keeper mattered less as a person than as a duty. That was the job.
