About the piece
The Elder
The Irish had a word for it: anmchara, soul friend. Every monk had one — an older person you confessed to privately and repeatedly, rather than performing public penance once in a lifetime. The idea travelled out of Ireland with its missionaries and became the confession the whole Western church now uses.
The Elder is the half of that arrangement that did the listening.
