The Candlelit Vigil
A vigil is the opposite of a battle. It is the long, unwitnessed part of courage — sitting in a cold stone chamber, tending small lights, staying awake so that someone else can sleep. The warrior here is imagined rather than a named figure, but the duty is real enough: most of what held a community together looked like this rather than like a charge.
The Candlelit Vigil is the version of bravery that never made it into the poems.
