About the piece
Circle of Fire
The round shield was the most personal object a Celtic warrior owned. Classical writers described the boss, the paint, the noise of it — and noted that the pattern told you who you were facing before a word was spoken. A shield was an argument about identity, held at arm's length. The warrior here is imagined, but the logic of the object is not.
Circle of Fire puts that argument between a figure and a wall of flame, and lets it stand.
