About the piece
A Meeting of Keepers
Irish abbacies ran in families. The comarba — the heir of the founder — was often a kinsman, and some houses passed the office down the same bloodline for three or four centuries, with the abbot sometimes not in orders at all. Church and dynasty were never really separable here.
A Meeting of Keepers shows the kind of gathering where an institution and a family were the same conversation.
