The Quiet Lake

Lough Derg in Donegal has taken pilgrims for something close to a thousand years, without a break — three days of fasting, bare feet and no sleep, on an island in a cold lake. Medieval Europe knew it as St Patrick's Purgatory and came from as far as Hungary. It is still running.

The Quiet Lake looks peaceful. Irish lakes have a long history of asking a great deal.
