About the piece
The Island Graveyard
On the Irish islands the dead were rowed home. Families kept burial rights in a graveyard their people had used for centuries, and a coffin went into a currach and across open water because the alternative — being buried somewhere else — was not considered.
The Island Graveyard marks ground people crossed the sea to reach, in the one direction that was never optional.
