About the piece
The City Remembers
The Celtic cross as most people picture it is a Victorian object. The nineteenth-century revival took the medieval form, standardised it and put it over graves in Glasnevin and Mount Jerome, where it became a way of saying something about the country without having to say it aloud. That is why it reads as Irish rather than merely as Christian.
The City Remembers stands in the tradition of a symbol reissued for a modern argument.
