About the piece
At the Edge of the Land
The early Irish church had a habit of choosing the worst possible ground. Skellig Michael, Inishmurray, the far tips of the western peninsulas — sites picked for exposure rather than shelter, on the reasoning that the harder the place, the more the devotion counted. Comfort was understood to be the enemy.
At the Edge of the Land stands where somebody decided that difficulty was the point.
