The Woven Circle
The back of the Tara Brooch is worked as finely as the front. Pinned to a cloak, that side faced the wearer's body and was seen by nobody, ever. The craftsman decorated it anyway, to a standard no audience would reward. Insular art is full of this — care spent where care could not be noticed.
The Woven Circle comes from a tradition that finished the parts you cannot see.
