About the piece
The Celtic Wolf
Ireland was wolf country for so long that English writers called it Wolfland, and the wolfhound was bred for one purpose. The last wolf is traditionally said to have been killed in Carlow in 1786. The animal is gone from the island entirely and has never stopped appearing in its art.
The Celtic Wolf is a portrait of something the country removed and then refused to forget.
