About the piece
The Sea at Night
Ireland's oldest record of the sky is monastic. The annals were kept by men in coastal houses who noted eclipses, comets and strange lights in the north alongside battles and deaths of abbots, in the same flat register — no distinction between what happened on the ground and what happened above it. They were not doing astronomy. They were keeping account.
The Sea at Night is that view: the dark water, the islands, and someone writing it down.
