About the piece
The Morning Cloister
The cloister reached Ireland in 1142, when Malachy brought the Cistercians to Mellifont and with them a plan drawn in Burgundy: four ranges around a square, everything in its place. Within a century the older arrangement had largely gone. It was the point at which Irish monasticism stopped improvising its own shape and adopted a European one.
The Morning Cloister is that borrowed form in first light — proof that continuity and change were never opposites here.
