About the piece
Carved in Warmth
The Ardagh Chalice hides filigree so fine it needs magnification to resolve. It was made for a church lit by candles, where nobody could have seen the half of it — the gold was there to catch a moving flame and hint at detail rather than display it. Warmth, not clarity, was the effect being engineered.
Carved in Warmth is built for the same light: enough to draw the eye, never quite enough to finish looking.
